Over 2,000 Residents of ‘Kampung Chuchoh Puteri A’ Enjoy Clean Water Supply Through Collaboration Between Zurich Takaful dan Islamic Aid Malaysia

Over 2,000 residents of Kampung Chuchoh Puteri A can now enjoy access to a more stable and continuous supply of clean water through the Clean Water for the Community Program, funded by the Corporate Zakat Responsibility (CZR) Program of Zurich General Takaful Malaysia Berhad (Zurich Takaful) in strategic collaboration with Islamic Aid Malaysia (IAM).

This program was carried out to help a community that has long faced challenges in securing an adequate supply of clean water. For more than three decades, the villagers relied entirely on a gravity-fed water system sourced from a nearby stream for daily needs such as cooking, drinking and washing. That water supply was also used to support the farming, livestock-rearing and crop-cultivation activities that are the main source of income for most of the residents.

However, the growing number of residents and new houses meant the existing system could no longer meet current demand. The situation worsened by low water pressure, a limited catchment area, and old, deteriorating pipes that frequently sprang leaks. During the dry season, the water flow slowed considerably and at times failed to reach residents' homes, disrupting both daily life and local economic activity.

This Clean Water Project involved improvements to the water intake structure, replacement of the old, damaged pipes, the installation of two 3,000-gallon HDPE tanks, the installation of a membrane-based water filtration system and upgrading works to nearly 5 kilometers of piping — running from the water source to the storage tanks and on to the main pipe network. A pump house was also built to channel the treated clean water for residents' daily use and for farming activities.

Beyond providing clean water for residents' daily use, the facility also benefits the village mosque, a childcare center, a community center and several madrasahs in the village. The more stable water supply is also expected to support the continuity of farming activities and improve the productivity of residents who depend on the sector as their source of income.

The official launch and handover ceremony for the Clean Water for the Community Program was officiated by YBhg. Dato' Wan Mohd Fadzmi Che Wan Othman Fadzilah, Chairman of Zurich General Takaful Malaysia Berhad and Zurich Takaful Malaysia Berhad, together with Mr Zawahir Abdullah, President of Islamic Aid Malaysia. The ceremony was also attended by local residents, community representatives and Zurich staff from the East Coast region and Kuala Lumpur.

Commenting on the implementation of the program, YBhg. Dato' Wan Mohd Fadzmi Che Wan Othman Fadzilah, Chairman of Zurich General Takaful Malaysia Berhad and Zurich Takaful Malaysia Berhad, said, "Access to clean water is a basic necessity that has a direct impact on health, wellbeing and daily life. For the residents of Kampung Chuchoh Puteri A, this facility not only helps meet their daily needs, but also supports the farming activities and sources of income that are the foundation of their livelihood.

"As a takaful protection provider, we are honored to be able to channel a wakalah zakat contribution through an initiative that delivers real and lasting benefit. We hope this facility will help ease the challenges the community has faced and strengthen the well-being of the residents here. We deeply appreciate the cooperation of Islamic Aid Malaysia and the local residents, who together made this project a success."

According to Zawahir Abdullah, President of Islamic Aid Malaysia, "As an NGO, Islamic Aid Malaysia (IAM) serves as an intermediary between individuals and corporate bodies seeking to carry out humanitarian efforts to help those in need.

"We are honored to have the opportunity to work with Zurich Takaful on a project that is deeply meaningful and beneficial to the residents here. This project is a testament to Zurich Takaful's commitment to improving the standard of living of rural communities. We believe that access to clean water not only enhances quality of life but also opens the door to sustainable development."

"I am confident that the efforts undertaken by Zurich Takaful will have a positive and meaningful impact on the residents of this village, especially as they will now enjoy a source of clean water. This Clean Water for the Community Project began in early June and has been fully completed today. I am very proud that the residents here came together in strong unity, working hand in hand with a real spirit of cooperation to make this project a success and complete it within the timeframe set," he said.

This program reflects the ongoing commitment of Zurich Takaful and Islamic Aid Malaysia to empowering communities through the provision of sustainable basic amenities. With the completion of this project, over 2,000 residents of Kampung Chuchoh Puteri A can now enjoy a higher-quality clean water supply, contributing to improved health, wellbeing and overall quality of life for the community.
